Current Employment Statistics (CES)

The Current Employment Statistics program is responsible for monthly estimates of nonfarm jobs, work hours and earnings across industries within the state. As defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonfarm jobs are the measurement of workers (excluding proprietors, private household employees, unpaid volunteers, farm employees, and the unincorporated self-employed) who received payment for work performed during the pay period which included the 12th of the month. This includes those on paid leave during this pay period. Additionally, workers with more than one job are counted separately for each job held.

What is the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program?

Data is gathered by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ workplace survey which is sent to around 121,000 businesses and government agencies, covering 631,000 individual worksites across the country, and over 23,000 worksites in Idaho. These job estimates are essential for tracking the growth and health of the economy in the state, as well as in its six Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). CES information allows investors to see what sectors may be growing and policy makers to understand current strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats currently facing Idaho’s economy.
